FAQ: Answering your Questions
Q: Are there other, natural, explanations for paranormal phenomena?
A: If you are experiencing phenomena, especially that which seems like a paranormal attack at night or when you're trying to sleep, you may be experiencing what's called Sleep Paralysis (or correctly "Awareness during Sleep Paralysis"). ASP is a condition characterized by the inability to move or speak during the state just before dropping off to sleep (the hypnagogic state) or just before fully awakening from sleep (the hypnopompic state). It is often accompanied by a feeling that there is some sort of presence which arouses fear in the experiencer. The paralysis lasts only a short while (seconds to minutes), but the experience may involve visual, auditory, or tactile hallucinations. The symptoms of sleep paralysis are similar to the description many paranormal experiencers give in their recounting. These Sleep Paralysis hallucinations can include alien abduction events, "Old Hag" or creature attacks, visions of the dearly departed, Incubus / Succubus and demonic or supernatural assault. These can also be accompanied by an Out of the Body Experience or a sensation of disassociation. (More detailed classifications here).
Sleep Paralysis itself is a naturally occurring paralysis during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle that keeps us from harm by acting out our dreams as with sleep walking. Awareness during Sleep paralysis is something many people experience once or twice in a lifetime, but is a frequent occurrence of those suffering from narcolepsy and is thought to be a side effect of lucid dreaming.
There are simple techniques to cope with these events that have helped many. Please see the links below for more information.
